Looking for dog-friendly beaches in the Netherlands or on the Belgian coast? Good news: from autumn to spring, most of the North Sea coast opens up to dogs again. In summer it gets trickier, because every town writes its own rules. Here are the best spots, the real dates, and how to read a beach like a local.

In short

  • There is no national rule: each town (gemeente) sets its own dog rules for the beach.
  • Roughly from October to spring, dogs are welcome on most beaches, often off leash.
  • In summer, look for dedicated dog zones or go early in the morning and in the evening.
  • Seals on the beach? Leash your dog and keep at least 30 metres away.

Can dogs go on the beach in the Netherlands and Belgium?

Yes, but the answer depends on two things: where and when. Neither country has one national beach rule for dogs. Each coastal town decides, and the rules usually follow the bathing season.

The pattern is almost always the same. In the quiet months, the beach is a giant playground. In the busy months, dogs get their own stretch of sand, or they are welcome only before the crowds arrive and after they leave. The exact dates differ per town, so a beach that is fine on 30 September can be off-limits a day earlier somewhere else.

The golden rule: read the sign at the beach entrance. Those signs are the local rule in a nutshell, and they win over anything you read online, including this article.

Dog-friendly beaches in the Netherlands: the best spots

The Hague: Scheveningen and Kijkduin

The Hague has 11 kilometres of coast and some of the clearest rules in the country. From 1 October to 15 May, your dog may run loose along the whole Hague coast. From 15 May to 1 October, dogs are allowed only in these parts:

  • Zuiderstrand: the whole beach between 21:00 and 07:00.
  • Zuiderstrand: day and night from beach entrance 2 (end of the Machiel Vrijenhoeklaan car park) to the border with Westland.
  • Zuiderstrand: day and night between beach entrance 9 (Kwartellaan) and 10 (Duivelandsestraat).
  • Noorderstrand: day and night from the end of the Zwarte Pad car park to the border with Wassenaar.

One more thing: in The Hague you must always carry a poop bag when you walk your dog, all year round.

Zandvoort

Zandvoort is the classic day trip from Amsterdam. Dogs are allowed on the beach day and night from 1 October to 15 April. From 15 April to 1 October, they are welcome only between 19:00 and 09:00. That makes a summer sunrise walk with Max a very good plan.

Texel

Texel is a dream for dog owners, with long beaches, woods and dunes. Outside the high season, dogs may run loose on certain parts of the beach. During the high season and bird breeding period (1 March to 1 September), dogs must be leashed in the zones marked on the island's official dog map, and on guarded beach sections when the signs say so. In the woods of De Dennen and the Krimbos, dogs may run loose, as long as they come when called.

Texel also asks you to keep an eye on sheep and birds. Dogs that chase sheep can cause real harm, so the leash goes on near the flock.

Hollands Duin: the dunes behind the beach

Between Noordwijk and Wassenaar, Staatsbosbeheer manages the dunes of Hollands Duin. At the south side of Boswachterij Noordwijk there is an off-leash area where dogs may run all year, provided they are under voice control. In Boswachterij Wassenaar, dogs may run loose from 15 August to 15 March, on the paths; the rest of the year they go on the leash for the breeding season. In grazing areas the leash is always required.

Dog-friendly beaches on the Belgian coast

De Panne

De Panne splits its beach into four zones, which sounds complicated but is actually handy. The best one for dogs is zone 4, from the sand-yacht centre towards France. In winter, dogs may run loose there all day. In summer (15 June to 15 September), they must be leashed between 10:30 and 18:30 and may run free between 18:30 and 10:30. In zones 1 and 3 the leash stays on all year, and zone 2 (between Canadezenplein and De Rampe) is closed to dogs in summer.

Blankenberge and Zeebrugge

According to the Belgian railway company NMBS/SNCB, there is a stretch of beach just in front of the dunes between Blankenberge and Zeebrugge where leashed dogs are welcome all year. The station in Blankenberge is only about 600 metres from the promenade, which makes it a perfect car-free day out. More on that in our guide to taking your dog on the train.

Knokke-Heist

Knokke-Heist is stricter: dogs are banned from the beach between 15 March and 15 October, from 10:00 to 20:00. Since May 2026, though, leashed dogs are officially welcome on the terrace and bar area of the beach bars. Coffee with a view, with your dog under the table.

Tip from the SCOBYDOG team

Summer beach time is about timing. Go before 9:00 or after 19:00: cooler sand, empty beaches, and no stress about where the dog zone starts. Luna gets her zoomies, you get your coffee.

Off-leash areas beyond the beach

No beach nearby? The dunes and forests are often just as good. In the Netherlands, Staatsbosbeheer welcomes dogs in most of its nature areas on a leash and has marked off-leash areas in many of them. "Under voice control" there means your dog stays close and comes back when you call.

In Flanders, the Agency for Nature and Forest (Natuur en Bos) has fenced or marked dog zones in many of its nature areas. Outside those zones, the dog stays on the leash and on the paths. Its online map shows every zone, which is handy for a rainy Sunday plan. For the rules in town, like leash laws and cleaning up, see our article on dog rules in the Netherlands and Belgium.

What to bring for a beach day with your dog

A beach looks like freedom, but there are plenty of moments where the leash goes on: the boardwalk, the café, the leash zone, a seal on the sand. A harness that slips over the head in about 3 seconds with one click makes all those on-and-off moments easy, even with sandy, wiggling Rex. Its front D-ring turns your dog back towards you when he spots the gulls, and the pressure sits on the chest, not the throat.

Seagulls are the ultimate test for your shoulder. A bungee leash softens those sudden sprints. And in winter it gets dark early on the coast: reflective stitching helps cyclists and drivers see your dog on the way back to the car.

Your beach bag checklist:

  • Fresh water and a bowl (the most important item, see below).
  • Poop bags: mandatory in many towns, and simply decent everywhere.
  • A towel and a bottle of fresh water to rinse salt and sand from the coat.
  • A flat toy, like a frisbee, rather than a ball.

Beach safety: salt water, heat and seals

Salt water. A few mouthfuls of seawater usually only cause diarrhea, but large amounts can make a dog seriously ill, according to the American Kennel Club. Bring fresh water, take a break away from the water about every 15 minutes, and choose a flat toy: dogs swallow less water with it than with a ball.

Heat and sand. On sunny days, plan your walk early or late, and give your dog shade and rest. Rinse the coat with fresh water before you head home.

Seals. Seals regularly rest on Dutch and Belgian beaches. The Hague reports that the animal ambulance sees more and more seals with dog bites, and seals can also bite back. See a seal? Leash your dog straight away and keep at least 30 metres away.

Is your dog vomiting, very lethargic, confused or shaking after a beach day where he drank seawater? Call your vet straight away. Do not wait to see if it passes.

FAQ

Are dogs allowed on the beach in winter in the Netherlands?

On most beaches, yes. In The Hague dogs are welcome everywhere from 1 October to 15 May, in Zandvoort day and night from 1 October to 15 April. Each town sets its own dates, so check the sign at the entrance.

Can my dog run off leash on the beach?

Often yes outside the summer season, for example on the whole Hague coast from October to mid-May and in zone 4 of De Panne in winter. Your dog must always come when called, and some zones keep a leash rule all year.

Which Belgian beaches welcome dogs in summer?

De Panne zone 4 (towards France) allows dogs all summer, on the leash during the day and free in the evening and early morning. NMBS also mentions a stretch between Blankenberge and Zeebrugge where leashed dogs are welcome all year.

What should I do if my dog drinks seawater?

Stop the drinking, offer fresh water and shade, and watch your dog closely. Vomiting, weakness, confusion or tremors mean a call to the vet right away.

Do I have to clean up after my dog on the beach?

Yes. The Hague, Zandvoort, Texel and De Panne all ask you to pick up poop, and in The Hague you must always carry a bag.
